La DGT (General Directorate of Traffic) has surprised public opinion, by lowering the speed margins that until now were allowed on radars. Said margins allowed to circulate above the established limits, without proceeding to fine whoever exceeds them.
This 'grace' margin implied that for areas with the maximum limitation of 120 km, up to 130 km were admitted without the driver being sanctioned. This tolerance was motivated to avoid imbalances or errors in the measuring devices, which could imply an unfair sanction.
According to what has been published in the press, Traffic has decided without prior notice or public communication to reduce these margins. In addition, said modification has coincided with the summer holidays, giving rise to numerous unexpected sanctions.. This measure would be applied to both fixed and mobile radars
What are the new margins now?
No more having a higher speed margin, which even provided extra security in overtaking. According to statements by the DGT, the previous margin of 10% has been reduced to 5% for fixed speed cameras and 7% for mobile speed cameras.
We will no longer be able to drive on the motorway above 130 km/h without being fined, now we would be sanctioned for exceeding 126 km/h with a fixed radar or 128 km/h for a mobile radar.
On roads with a speed limit lower than 100 km/h, a margin of 5 km/h would be applied for fixed speed cameras and 7 km/h for mobile speed cameras.
