Is it mandatory to insure motor vehicles?
Spanish legislation requires all motor vehicles in circulation in Spain to be insured. Literally, Royal Decree 8/2004, of October 29, says "Any owner of motor vehicles that has their usual parking lot in Spain will be obliged to sign and keep in force an insurance contract for each vehicle they own, which covers, up to the amount of the compulsory insurance limits, civil liability for damages caused to persons or property due to traffic. The amounts of compulsory insurance coverage are:
- personal injury: 70 million euros per incident, whatever the number of victims.
- Material damage: 15 million euros per claim.
What other coverage can I take out in car insurance?
Insurers offer, in addition to compulsory insurance, different coverage options for a car:
- Breakage of windscreen and side windows
- Theft or damage due to attempted theft and fire
- Total loss or All Risk
- Travel assistance
- Driver and occupant accidents
Can I insure a motorcycle at all risks?
Both motorcycles and cars can be fully insured. This implies that your vehicle will be covered for any damage it suffers even if you are the cause of the accident.
How do I insure a caravan?
With the technical file and the vehicle's registration permit, in addition to the documentation of the owner and driver, you will be able to insure a caravan, both the compulsory insurance and the rest of the possible additional coverage.
